Biography

David DeChristofaro graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1974. After high school, he attended The Ohio State University his freshman year, and then transferred to YSU, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in 1978. While studying engineering at YSU, he worked in the City of Niles Engineering Department from 1976 to 1978. Shortly after graduation from YSU, he was appointed to the position of Niles City Engineer in 1978.

David received his license as a Professional Engineer in Ohio, in 1982. Studying part-time at YSU, he received his MBA degree summa cum laude in 1983. In 1983, he also received his Class III Operator’s License in Wastewater Works. In 1984, he received his Class III Operator’s License in Water Supply, and his Class II Operator’s License in Water Distribution Systems, as well as his license as a Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania. During this time, David also worked part-time for several professional surveyors in order to prepare for obtaining his license in surveying.

In 1983, David started a small private practice in engineering, where he began by serving the structural steel fabricating industry, preparing shop drawings for the fabrication and erection of steel structures. At the same time, he continued to work part-time with several professional surveyors on residential boundary surveys. He did this until 1986, when he and a partner formed a private gas and oil development and production company, D & L Energy, Inc.

In 1986, he accepted a position with the Cafaro Company in Youngstown, Ohio, where he started as a Development Engineer, working on the engineering and development of malls and shopping centers across the country.

While with the Cafaro Company, David continued to work in his private engineering practice, as well as his prospering oil and gas development business. He managed to continue this pace until 1990, when he decided to resign from his position as company President and Treasurer of D & L Energy, and sell his stock in the company in order to refocus on his goals as an engineer. He still today, however, remains a Joint Venture member with D & L Energy.

David received his License as a Professional Surveyor in Ohio in 1993. In the same year, he was promoted to the position of Director of Development Engineering for the Cafaro Company, with responsibilities for site engineering of all Cafaro developments.

While still with the Cafaro Company, David was retained by the City of Niles in 1995 to serve part-time as City Engineer. His responsibilities with the city include: preparing plans for various city public works projects; reviewing engineering plans for private developments in the city; and providing professional engineering advice to the Engineering Department. During this time, David continued to maintain his private practice in engineering; designing many residential developments throughout Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana Counties.

In 1998, David was appointed as Vice-President of Development for the Cafaro Company; and in 2002, his position was expanded to Vice-President of Engineering and Development. Over the years, David has worked on projects for the Cafaro Company totaling in excess of $500 Million, and over $100 Million in related public highway improvements, in 11 states across the country.

In preparing to run for County Engineer in 2008, David decided in 2002 to further his education by studying for his Ph.D. in Public Administration. He completed his degree requirements and graduated summa cum laude from Madison University in 2005.

Since taking the office of Trumbull County Engineer on January 5, 2009, David has resigned from his positions with the Cafaro Company and the City of Niles, and is serving full time as Trumbull County Engineer.

David and his wife Becky (Shaffer) DeChristofaro were married in 1978. They have a daughter Lindsey, a graduate student at YSU and NEOUCOM studying for her Doctorate in Physical Therapy. They reside in Niles.
